Repairing fabric damage to your parasol canvas

Although you may handle your parasol with care, fabric damage can still occur over time. Such a bummer, of course.

Consider, for example, the following: your parasol has been left open during a heavy hailstorm, or in the storage, pests have nestled in the canvas and have attacked the canvas. What can you do about this damage when the rest of the canvas is still in good condition and it is way too early to replace it?

Cause of fabric damage

First of all, it is important to determine the cause of the damage. Might the canvas have been stored while it was damp and are black dots now visible in the canvas? Did the parasol stand in the wind without a tension cord and protective cover? In the latter case, the ribs can be moved by the wind. If a piece of canvas is stuck between these ribs, it can happen that over time wear and tear develops on that piece of canvas. As soon as you open it and the sun shines on it, you can see a bit of light shining through the canvas at the bottom. It’s a pity, but luckily there are several solutions.

The right way to store

Prevention is always better than cure, so we would like to give you some storage tips. For starters, you should only store a dry canvas. You should first let a wet canvas dry to prevent mould formation. As tempting as it may be to simply tie the flaps of the folded parasol together, it is really worthwhile to unfold the flaps, piece by piece, between the ribs. This way, the ribs cannot damage the fabric in between by friction. In most cases, the canvas of the parasols have a stitched cord. The strap is supplied separately with the larger parasols, intended for the catering industry. After you have removed the flaps from between the ribs, you can put them all over each other to the left or right. You can now tie the bow or strap around it. This prevents movement in the stored parasol and this way your canvas remains as new.

Tear-Aid

Accidents can happen, but how can we deal with a cut in the canvas? After all, the parasol canvas is under tension and you absolutely do not want to worsen the damage. The answer to your question is: Tear-Aid! Tear-Aid type A is a transparent multifunctional repair agent. It permanently repairs holes and cuts in virtually all materials. The material is extremely strong, waterproof and airtight, very elastic, does not discolour and does not dry out. Ideal for your damaged parasol canvas. The purposes for this material are endless since it can also be used as tarpaulin, awnings, fabric convertible roofs, waders, rubber (inflatable) boats, air mattresses, canoes, sun and rain screens, wetsuits, raincoats, bicycle inner tubes, saddles, drysuits, kites, jackets and bags. Tear-Aid also adheres to products made of aluminum, stainless steel, polyester and more. The set contains Tear-Aid repair patch Type A (30x8cm), reinforcement wire (45cm) for the repair of tears at edges, 4 alcohol wipes for cleaning the surface and clear multilingual instructions.

Sailmaker

If the damage to your canvas is larger than 30×8 cm, it is advisable to inquire at a sailmaker. After assessing the damage, they can see what they can do for you. For minor repairs, a local workshop is always able to assist you in repairing the damage.
